In week six, we discussed mainly about how to build a reliable and participatory personal learning network effectively.

From the reading material in week six, Woods lists and describes several tips of building a PLN successfully, including asking and listening from other people, leveraging technology (i.e. Social media), trying out Twitter, and looking for people similar to ours (Woods, 2013). For me, in prior to building a podcast on a topic of my choice, I would explore and join in different communities in relation to my topic by using hashtags, and follow the Twitter accounts of professionals. As Woods described, “Twitter has become a key hub in the past few years for the learning and development community world-wide” and there are many ways of using Twitter to build a PLN effectively (Woods, 2013). For example, first, I can follow my favorite experts’ Twitter accounts in order to get more inspirations professionally. Also, I can explore different online communities in relation to my favorite topics and join in on learning and development tweet chats in order to build connection and interaction to the public.

Additionally, from the discussion between Professor Miller and Mo Amir, Mo Amir also stated that Twitter can be considered as a perfect medium and help people to create some of the network successfully. Therefore, in my opinion, before building a podcast, using Twitter to create a PLN will be effective, meaningful, and important.

Also, as Mo Amir described, “if you have a guest who’s one the podcast and they have a high profile, they will share it with their followers obviously, so more people will see it and their followers will see and listen to the podcast” Therefore, based on this point, in my opinion, in order to use my PLN with the intent to expand my audience, it will be important and meaningful for me to make sure my tweets are professional and can reflect my own personality as well.

In my opinion, when developing an audience on any social media platform, it will be very important for people to consider about the privacy and security concerns in some parts. First, when creating the personal profile on social media platforms, such as Twitter and Instagram, we need to pay more attention to set up our personal information like cellphone number and location. Also, it’s worth noting that our IP addresses can be mapped to specific locations and a string of IP addresses can give a sense of our movement over time as well; therefore, it may cause potential risks of privacy to us. Second, when sending messages in public by using social media tools, it will be also important to delete all location information, especially when we want to tag location to photos.

In my opinion, the privacy and security concerns, such as setting up personal profile and turning off the photo tagging,  will also be important and valuable for individuals who become influential in a social space because it can help them to protect their personal information online directly through social media tools.

  1. Hi there! I found your blog post this week to be very interesting!! I had not thought about looking at hashtags on twitter to see who is engaged with the topic of your choice. Additionally I found the idea of IP addresses as a security concern to be intriguing as it is not something I thought about prior. Thank you for sharing this!!

  2. Good day Ray! This is very insightful take on building your PLN for your podcast. I noticed that we have the same first step in building our PLN and that is to get inspirations from the professionals in the field. Although I am already familiar with podcasts, I believe that I still have a lot to learn and the best way to learn podcast to learn from the experts. Also, I totally agree with the idea that your tweets should be professional and it should also reflect your personality. That way, your followers will be able to know who you really are. If they liked your personality, they will also be interested to make a connection with you.

  3. Hello Leah,

Thank you for your reply. I begin to be more interested in the security concerns of our IP addresses since I have to use VPN during this semester because I am in China right now. As I described in my post, I feel that our IP addresses will cause the risk of letting other people know our specific locations.
